Lim sacks MPD’s anti-carjacking chief

MANILA, Philippines—Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim on Friday ordered the relief of Manila Police District’s Anti-Carnapping Unit chief over reports of high incidence of carjacking in the city, a police official said.

Chief Inspector Ariel Caramoan was removed from his post and would be replaced by Chief Inspector Rizalino Pecayo, said MPD director Senior Superintendent Alejandro Gutierrez.

“Walang nahuhuling carnapper (He’s not able to arrest any carjacker),” Gutierrez said in a text message as to why he was removed, adding that the order was effective Friday.

Meanwhile, Lim also announced an “impending revamp” as he and Gutierrez will be reviewing the performance of the station chiefs for the past months.

He said precinct commanders should be aware of everything that is happening in their areas of jurisdiction.

“Precincts that are not at par with the performance expected of them should also expect changes,” Lim said.
