Cebuanos dominate painting competition
Two Cebuano artists dominated last month’s first ever Cebu national painting competition.
Mark Lloyd Belicario and Adeste de Guilmo bested 13 other finalists to win their respective categories.
Belicario and De Guilmo bagged P100,000 grand prize each for the traditional representational category and figurative abstract category respectively.
A project of Ka-Alyado ng Sining, the national art competition was organized and funded by three art patrons, namely lawyer Diosdado “Jojo” Allado, Richard Ang and Cebuano businessman Michael Lloyd Dino.
The competition held its judging at the Sacred Heart Center, followed by the awarding of winners at SM City Cebu Art Center during the opening of the exhibition of the 26 winning entries.
The winning entries – 13 for each category – were chosen from around the 200 entries submitted from all over the country.

Article continues after this advertisementThe second placers for the traditional representational category and fiurative abstract category were Felix Catarata and Ben Cruz.
They each received P75,000 and a trophy for their entry Mudflat Market and Pasa-Hero, respectively.
The third prize winners for the traditional representational category and figurative abstract category, Emar Lacorte and Jeffrey Salon, won P50,000 cash and trophy for their entry Kinabuhi sa Quiapo and Kalesa respectively.
Five finalists for each of the two categories were given P10,000 each and certificates and another P5,000 each were given to the 10 merit awardees.
They are Ramon De Dios (4th place), Walter Vestil (5th), Christian Quiros (6th), Maria Lourdes Inosanto (7th) and Facundo Tagalog Jr. for the traditional representational category; Paul Arenas (4th), Tupe Peralta (5th), Mary Elwin de Jesus (6th), Marrz Capanang (7th) and Noel Sagayap (8th) for the figurative abstract category.
Merit awardees for the traditional representational category were Clint Normandia (9th), Melbourne Paano (10th), Randy Plarisan (11th), Geraldine Ocamp (12th) and Jesus Rona (13th).
Merit awardees for the figurative abstract category were Sariel Ancheta (9th), Ivan Macarambon (10th), Danilo Celum (11th), Malvin Lim (12th), and Juan Tulas (13th).
The judges were Art Association of the Philippines president Fidel Sarmiento, well-known painter Fil de la Cruz, elite Philippine artist and lepidopterist Justin “Tiny” Nuyda, Cebuano artists Jose “Kimsoy” Yap Jr., Chito Alcordo, Javy Villacin and Karl Roque Jr.
Ka-Alyado ng Sining also sponsored last year’s Carcar competition.
