2 killed due to bad weather

MANILA, Philippines—Two persons were killed in separate incidents due to rains spawned by the southwest monsoon and typhoon Lawin, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said.

According to a belated report by the NDRRMC, Jessie Ehem Sam, 31, of Cebu City, was hit by a lightning Friday morning. She was picking shells and other seafoods along San Vicente village in Bogo City when the incident occurred past 6 a.m.

She was rushed to the Severo Veralio Memorial Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival, the NDRRMC said.

Earlier, the Office of Civil Defense in Zamboanga Peninsula reported that a 5-year-old boy was killed while he was asleep after he was hit by a falling tree that hit their house in Labuan village, Zamboanga City, past 2 a.m. on Monday due to bad weather.

The rains and strong winds were caused by southwest monsoon enhanced by typhoon Lawin, last spotted 405 kilometers east of Virac, Catanduanes, with maximum sustained winds of 185 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up 220 kph.

It is moving north northwest at 7 kph.

On Tuesday morning, Lawin is expected to be 640 km east of Infanta, Quezon, and by Wednesday morning, 530 km east of Tuguegarao City.

On Thursday morning, the typhoon is forecast to be 430 km east of Calayan Island.
