More politicos for QC: 2 solons, 12 dads

Quezon City will soon have six instead of four legislative districts with President Benigno Aquino III’s signing into law of Republic Act 10170.

The two new districts will be taken from District 2 which is the city’s biggest in terms of population and land area. The second district covers 30 barangays in Novaliches, Fairview and parts of Commonwealth Avenue.

Once the new law takes effect, however, District 2 will consist of just six barangays: Bagong Silangan, Batasan Hills, Commonwealth, Holy Spirit, Payatas and Fairview.

On the other hand, District 5 will be composed of Barangays Bagbag, Capri, Greater Lagro, Gulod, Kaligayahan, Nagkaisang Nayon, North Fairview, Novaliches Proper, Pasong Putik Proper, San Agustin, San Bartolome, Santa Lucia, Santa Monica and Talipapa.

District 6, meanwhile, will cover Barangays Apolonio Samson, Baesa, Balon-Bato, Culiat, New Era, Pasong Tamo, Sangandaan, Tandang Sora, Unang Sigaw, and Sauyo.

With the new law, six councilors will be elected for each of new district in the next national and local elections.

In the meantime, the congressman and councilors of the second district will continue to hold office until the new representatives and councilors of the new districts are elected.

City Administrator Dr. Victor Endriga has welcomed the creation of the additional legislative districts, saying it was long overdue.

“It will be good for the city as the constituents of District 2 will have more representatives in Congress and in the local council,” he said in a phone interview.

The city government has allotted P1 billion for the offices of the 12 new councilors, he added.

Endriga said he was hopeful that improvements in terms of development and social services would come with the creation of the additional districts. With Norman Bordadora
