Hurricane Emilia strengthens far out in Pacific

MIAMI— Emilia has strengthened to a Category Three hurricane in the Pacific far off the coast of Mexico but is still not posing a threat to land.

The hurricane’s maximum sustained winds late Monday night were 120 mph (193 kph) and further strengthening was expected.

Emilia is centered about 680 miles (1094 kilometers) south-southwest of the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California and is moving west-northwest at 14 mph (23 kph).

Meanwhile, farther west over the Pacific, Hurricane Daniel had maximum sustained winds near 75 mph (121 kph). The hurricane is expected to weaken slowly during the next 48 hours and was moving west at 17 mph (27 kph).
