Wounded students in deadly Tacloban school shooting climb to 13

TACLOBAN CITY—The number of people wounded in the shooting at San Jose National High School in this city has climbed to 13, as authorities continue to account for victims and investigate the incident that sent panic across the campus on Monday.

Police said the wounded, all students, were brought to several hospitals: seven were confined at Leyte Provincial Hospital, three at City Hospital, one at Ace Hospital, and two at the Eastern Visayas Medical Center.

A 44-year-old parent who works at the school canteen said she first noticed something unusual when she saw two students carrying what appeared to be firearms inside the campus.

Moments later, she heard a series of gunshots that left three students, aged 16 to 17, dead.

“We were all shocked. We did not know what to do. We tried to hide while worrying about our children,” she said.

Her two sons, aged 14 and 16, managed to escape unharmed.

As news of the shooting spread, anxious parents and guardians rushed to the school grounds, desperately searching for their children.

Students were seen fleeing in panic, many in tears. Some left their bags and even shoes behind in their rush to flee the school premises.

Both suspects—identified as minors enrolled in Grades 9 and 10—were taken into police custody. /coa
