Kanlaon Volcano releases ash for the 20th time

Kanlaon Volcano emitted ash 19 times and had 18 volcanic earthquakes in the last two days, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

MANILA, Philippines — Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Island emitted ash on Tuesday afternoon, marking its 20th time of doing so in just a day, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

Phivolcs made the pronouncement after posting camera footage of the volcano’s latest ash emission event at 5:21 p.m. on Tuesday.

The ash emission generated grayish plumes that rose 400 meters above the crater before drifting southwest.

“A total of 20 ash emission events have been recorded since yesterday, generating 100 to 500 meter-tall plumes that drifted to the general southwest,” Phivolcs said.

Meanwhile, Alert Level 2 remains raised over Kanlaon Volcano.

Under Alert Level 2, sudden steam-driven (phreatic) eruptions and signs of impending magmatic activity are possible. /apl
