Marcos adds 64 hectares to West Cebu Industrial Park ecozone

MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered the further expansion of the West Cebu Industrial Park (WCIP), a Philippine Economic Zone Authority (Peza)-registered special economic zone in Balamban town, Cebu province to more than 600 hectares (ha).

The President issued Proclamation No. 1288 on June 3, designating two parcels of land at Barangay Buanoy with a total area of 64.7229 ha, as part of the Cebu Special Economic Zone, subject to the provisions of Republic Act No. 7916, and upon the recommendation of the Peza.

The two parcels of land, identified as SK-07-000197 and SK-07-000198 and under the jurisdiction of the Philippine Reclamation Authority, have areas of 61.0515 hectares and 3.6714 hectares, respectively.

This is the third proclamation issued by Marcos which widened the WCIP.  The additional parcels of land brings the total aggregate land of WCIP to about 629.35 ha.

Marcos issued Proclamation No. 1105 in December last year, which included seven parcels of land with a total area of 6.949 ha located in Barangays Arpili and Buanoy in the WCIP.

In October 2024, Marcos issued Proclamation No. 710, designating 19 lots also in Barangays Arpili and Buanoy with a combined area of 17.6783 ha as part of the WCIP.

Established in 1992, WCIP has played a significant role as a key hub of the Philippines’ shipbuilding industry.

It is operated by Cebu Industrial Park Developers, Inc. (CIPDI), a joint venture between the Aboitiz Group and the Tsuneishi Group of Japan.

The WCIP’s main industrial estate covers 283 hectares. As a special economic zone, its locators receive government tax incentives.

The ecozone hosts 11 locators from medium to heavy industries, including some of the world’s largest shipbuilding firms, making Balamban the shipbuilding capital of the Philippines. /mr
