MANILA, Philippines — The Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFOMS) on Thursday urged Sen. Rodante Marcoleta to prove his claims that media personnel are “bayaran” (paid persons) or else retract his statement and apologize to journalists.
“These sweeping statements threaten media credibility and expose them to potential harm. Journalists have a duty to report accurately and impartially, and it is critical that public officials respect their role as watchdogs of accountability and truth,” PTFOMS said in a statement.
“Senator Marcoleta, who has previously championed accountability, should adhere to these ideals by either backing his claims with solid evidence or withdrawing his comments and apologizing to the journalists he has wrongfully accused,” it stressed.

Marcoleta made the “bayaran” remark during a meeting at the Senate earlier on Thursday.
The 18 alleged former Marines were at the meeting as part of proceedings investigating the flood control corruption scandal.
They previously claimed to be “bagmen” for former House of Representatives appropriations chairperson and resigned Ako Bicol party-list Rep. Zaldy Co, a key figure in the scandal.
“Casting vague aspersions against the media doesn’t foster constructive dialogue,” PTFOMS further said.
“It threatens the very foundations of democratic processes by attempting to sway public opinion against those tasked with holding those in power to account,” it added. /das
