MANILA, Philippines — A man was arrested for allegedly stealing P2,000 worth of diesel from a vehicle in Barangay Payatas, Quezon City, the police said on Monday.

Police officers on mobile patrol spotted the man “suspiciously climbing out of the garage premises” at a house in the Villa Gracia compound along Payatas Road and “carrying a gallon container” on Sunday night, the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) said in a statement.

“During questioning, the suspect claimed that he was allegedly instructed by the [car] owner’s nephew to retrieve diesel fuel from a vehicle tank for use in [their company’s] backhoe operations,” the QCPD explained.

“Upon verification with the owner and his nephew, both parties denied giving such instructions and confirmed that the suspect was no longer connected with the company,” it added.

It did not name the car owner’s company nor did it explain how the suspect was able to “steal” the diesel from the vehicle tank.

The QCPD identified the suspect by the alias “Bernard,” a 28-year-old resident of the barangay.
