SAN FRANCISCO, AGUSAN DEL SUR, Philippines — Butuan City Mayor Lawrence Fortun opened the 40th Balangay Festival 2026 on Tuesday, May 5, marking the start of the city’s annual celebration of its history, culture and identity.
This year’s celebration, however, is being held in a modest manner as the city recognizes the current global situation and the concerns affecting the country amid continuing tensions and unrest in the Middle East.
Despite the scaled-down festivities, the city government said the spirit of the Balangay Festival remains strong as Butuan continues to honor its rich heritage as the Home of the Balangays.

Balangay Festival dancers showcase their talent in a cultural performance depicting Butuan’s historic Balangay heritage, traditions, and maritime legacy dating back centuries.

The celebration is also considered significant this year as it coincides with the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the first Balangay boat in Butuan, a historic symbol of the city’s ancient maritime legacy and cultural identity.
As part of the opening activities, the city introduced the Balangayan Ambassadors and the candidates of Mutya Hong Butuan, who presented their advocacies focused on environmental protection, agriculture, tourism development, and strengthening the local economy.
City officials expressed hope that even with a simpler celebration, the festival would continue to foster unity among Butuan residents and help promote local tourism in the city. /cb
