Trekking at Mt. Kabunian in Benguet suspended after grass fire

BAGUIO CITY — Trekking and other activities at Mt. Kabunian in Bakun, Benguet have been temporarily suspended following a grass fire that struck the mountain on April 2 (Holy Thursday).
The Bakun Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported that the blaze, which spread from the summit to the base, prompted the rescue of 18 tourists and three guides.
Seven tourists and one guide were stranded at Station 12 as the fire reached their campsite, while 11 others, along with two guides, were stuck at the summit.
Eventually, all of them were accounted for, pronounced safe and evacuated.
Authorities said the suspension of trekking is intended to prevent further risks, citing the fire and the region’s rising heat index as potential hazards to visitors.
Mt. Kabunian, famous for its sweeping panoramic views and the so-called “Stairway to Mt. Kabunian,” is one of Benguet’s most popular trekking destinations. /apl
