LOOK: Devotees hold ‘Soledad’ procession in Iloilo City on Good Friday

ILOILO CITY, Philippines — In the silence of the night, devotees accompanied the image of the Sorrowful Mother during the traditional “Soledad” procession in Iloilo City on Good Friday.

Departing from St. Clement’s Church at 10 p.m. after the Santo Entierro, the silent procession serves as a communal act of accompanying the Virgin Mary in her bereavement following the crucifixion of Jesus.

Earlier, bathed in the soft glow of the evening, devotees perform the “du-aw” following the afternoon procession that depict the Passion of Christ.

For many Ilonggos, “duaw” or the act of visiting the Santo Entierro is a deeply personal vow of penance and gratitude, continuing a centuries-old tradition of mourning and reflection that concludes the solemnities of the day. /das
