Amihan, trough of storm outside PAR to bring rains over parts of Mindanao

MANILA, Philippines — Parts of the country may experience rains due to the northeast monsoon and the trough of a tropical storm with international name “Nuri” hovering outside the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR).
This is according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Association (Pagasa) during its morning forecast.
The northeast monsoon or amihan prevails over Luzon and the Visayas while the trough of Nuri is affecting the eastern section of Mindanao.
Nuri was last located 1,290 kilometers east of Eastern Visayas, moving slowly southwestward.
It has maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour and gustiness up to 80 kilometers per hour.
Pagasa weather specialist Chanel Dominguez said the tropical storm is not expected to enter the PAR, with only its trough affecting parts of the country.
“The trough or extension of clouds from this tropical storm is expected to bring rains over the eastern section of Mindanao,” she added.
Nuri’s trough will bring cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms in Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur and Davao Oriental.
Pagasa warned that flash floods or landslides are possible due to moderate to, at times, heavy rains.
Meanwhile, because of the amihan, Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela and Aurora may see cloudy skies with light rains.
Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon may experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains, also due to the amihan.
For the rest of Mindanao, residents may expect generally fair weather but with isolated rain showers and localized thunderstorms, especially in the afternoon or evening.
Heat Index Record
On Tuesday, the recorded heat index in Metro Manila ranged from 31°C to 32°C, while the highest heat index reached 38°C in Masbate City.
For Wednesday, the heat index in Metro Manila may range from 31°C to 33°C, with the highest possible reading reaching 39°C in Masbate City.
“The heat index values we have been recording are also not that high because of the surge of the northeast monsoon,” Dominguez explained.
She also noted that the bureau has not yet declared the official start of the hot and dry season. /apl
