Mayol says he wants to fight Marquez soon

FORMER WBC light flyweight champion Rodel Mayol expressed his desire to fight WBA flyweight king Hernan “Tyson” Marquez.

Mayol told this writer via e-mail that he was originally offered to fight the Mexican champion but had to turn it down because he lacked time to prepare.

“Ganahan ko ako sunod ma kuntra anang Hernan Marquez kay ako man ta na fight nya duol naman kaayo ko nila gipa hibaw, mao wala ko ni sugot. Karon na human na iyang fight ganahan ko ako mo kuntra ana niya, pero wala pako kahibaw kay busy man gud ang MP Promotions mao training lang sa ko ug hinay hinay,” (I really wanted to fight Hernan Marquez. I was offered to fight him but had to turn down the offer for lack of time to prepare. For the time being, I’ll just continue training), Mayol said.

MP Promotions is Manny Pacquiao’s boxing promotional outfit which is responsible for securing fights for the former Mandaue City native.

Mayol is now based in Los Angeles and has gone back to the gym in the hopes of making one more run at a legitimate world title.

Mayol did get an offer to fight for an interim WBA light flyweight title but while training here in Cebu, he was offered to fight in the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao vs. Shane Mosley showdown in Las Vegas last May 8.

Although Mayol won that fight, he reiterated his desire to campaign in the 112 flyweight division.
