St. John’s Institute extends streak to 4
THE visiting St. John’s Institute won two more games to hike their record to 4-0 in the SBP division in the ongoing Cebu Youth Basketball League (CYBL) Vismin Goodwill Games 2012 at the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu in Canduman, Mandaue City.
St. John’s decimated Ateneo de Davao, 56-37, before outlasting Ateneo de Iloilo, 44-40 in a total show of force for the Bacolod City-based squad.
Meanwhile, Cebu teams recovered from opening day losses and scored two straight wins during the second day of action in the grassroots-level basketball event.
Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu slipped past Ateneo de Iloilo, 46-40, and blasted the Cebu Eastern College, 59-50 while University of San Carlos surprised Ateneo de Davao, 53-46, and cruised past Don Bosco, 58-20.
St. John’s is trailed by SHS-Ateneo and USC with identical 3-1 slates. Ateneo de Davao fell to 2-2 after winning its first two assignments, making the race for the two finals slots interesting.
Meanwhile, in the Passerelle class, a three-way tie for first place occurred as CEC nipped SHS-Ateneo, 35-34, thanks to the three-point sniping of Denzel Sabroso. Assumption College of Davao made up for its two straight losses on Day 1 as it rebounded with two wins on Day 2, crushing Don Bosco, 49-32, before topping USC, 52-45, to end their elimination round with a 2-2 record.
Article continues after this advertisementUSC had earlier defeated Don Bosco 67-29. CEC, SHS-Ateneo, and USC are now tied for first place with 2-1 records. The Magis Eagles and Baby Warriors face each other in a virtual knock-out match to determine who makes it to the finals, while CEC’s last assignment is against Don Bosco. /Correspondent Jonas Panerio
