Firecracker-related injuries rise to 832; 4 dead

MANILA, Philippines — The number of monitored and recorded  firecracker – related injuries nationwide has exceeded 800, the latest data from the Department of Health (DOH) showed.

In a report released on Sunday, the DOH said it monitored 832 cases from December 22, 2024, to January 5, 2025, 37 percent higher than the 606 cases recorded over the same period last year.

The tally of people who died likewise increased to four, including  a 54-year-old man from the Calabarzon region who suffered severe injuries on his left hand due to “kwitis.” 

The age of 491 victims ranged from 19 years and below, while341 other victims are aged 20 and up.

Six hundred eighty five of the victims are male, and 147 female.

“Kwitis” remained the top cause of firecracker-related injuries, followed by 5-star and boga. 

According to DOH, the number of firecracker-related injuries is expected to increase until the end of its monitoring period on January 6.
