New peso bills show other aspects of PH pride
MANILA, Philippines — A lawmaker commended the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas on Monday for its new polymer banknote designs and defended it from criticisms that these reduced nationalism by replacing national heroes with native and endangered species.
Bohol Rep. Kristine Alexie Tutor, who chairs the House committee on civil service and professional regulation, said the “new designs stir Filipino pride in our culture, flora, and fauna” as she noted that the older peso bills with Philippine heroes remain in circulation.

“These new banknote series do not in any way diminish the expression of Filipino nationalism because they depict other aspects of Filipino pride,” she said. —Jeannette I. Andrade
