Villamor sees ALA sweep in PP 14

ALA Boxing Gym’s trainer Edmundo Villamor is confident his boxers will come out victorious in their respective bouts in the Pinoy Pride XIV: Night of Champions slated this Saturday at the Resorts World Manila.

Villamor, who trains two-division world champion and the current WBO light flyweight champion Donnie “Ahas” Nietes, WBO intercontinental flyweight champ Milan “El Metodico” Melindo and rising prospect Genesis “Azukal” Servania, predicted a sweep for the Filipino boxers against their opponents come fight night.

He said that at this stage, his boxers are just taking it easy and eager to step into the ring this Saturday.

“We have finished our rigid training. We are just maintaining their weight,” said Villamor. “They are not facing ordinary opponents, but I trust the three of them to win their bouts.”

Villamor trains the three boxers together with his brother and former champion Edito Villamor.

Nietes (33W-1L-3D-16KOs) will be be putting his 19-fight winning streak on the line against Mexican Felipe Salguero, who has a decent record of 16 wins (11KOs), two losses and one draw. He is the current number seven in his division.

In the main undercard, Melindo (26W-10KOs) will try to protect his unbeaten record against former WBO light flyweight champion Jesus Gelez of Colombia for the WBO international flyweight belt.

Servania (17W-5KOs) will be facing the biggest fight of his career as he takes on Genaro Garcia for the WBC international silver super-bantamweight championship.

Villamor said the 20-year old Bacolod City native Servania has a lot of potential to become like his stablemates Nietes and Melindo but only if he continues to face high-caliber opponents in his upcoming bouts.

Servania has already beaten noted boxers such as Mexican former world title challenger Gerson Guerrero, young Mexican prospect Carlos Cardenas and Kenyan slugger Nick Otieno.

“For me as a trainer, it is very important for a boxer to challenge and fight high caliber opponents to further improve his experience and skills,” said Villamor. “That’s one way of becoming of a future world champion.”
