Teachers of the elementary and high schools of barangay Luz in Cebu City worry that the recent fire may affect enrollment this year.

Barrio Luz Elementary School principal Jeanne Egger said she hoped to maintain if not increase this year’s enrollment.

Egger said the fire will affect their enrollees this year as some will end up transferring to another school.

The school has 158 grade school pupils and 47 high school students affected by the fire, according to social workers.

But Maria Evelyn Cuajao, Administrative Assistant of Barrio Luz High school, said she’s confident the fire would not affect their enrollment.

She said they started early enrollment on January 29 and as of March, they have 1,953 enrollees.

She said they ill not require the students to wear uniforms in the first month of classes and give special consideration to those whose uniforms and school supplies were gutted by the fire.

“Usually, we require them to wear a uniform in the second week of July,” said Cuajao.

The schools in barangay Luz are considered a “catchment area” for nearby barangays like Kamagong and Hipodromo.

Rosario Palanca, Brigada Eskwela Coordinator of Barrio Luz Elementary School, said that school advisers made a certification for students whose report cards were burned.

The report card is one of the requirements for the enrollment.

Palanca said they have started a clean-up on May 21 in rooms that were not occupied by the fire victims.

The students are expected to enroll after the Brigada Eskwela although more than 700 kindergarten and grade school pupils have enrolled as of yesterday.

But Cuajao said they have not repainted the rooms yet.

On June 2 and 3, a special Brigada Eskwela initiative will be done in barangay Luz.
