DOH affirms commitment to breast cancer treatment, awareness drives

MANILA, Philippines — To mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, the Department of Health (DOH) reiterated its commitment to prioritize initiatives that will help Filipinas prevent and recover from the said condition.

In a statement on Tuesday, the DOH said that Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa led a nationwide lighting of 137 iconic landmarks to symbolize unity in the fight against cancer last October 11.

Various areas in the country, such as the Quezon Memorial Shrine, Manila Hotel, Cagsawa Ruins in Albay, Fernan Bridge in Cebu, and the Grand Mosque in Cotabato City, are illuminated in pink—the international color for breast cancer awareness.

During the event, Herbosa highlighted the DOH’s commitment to improving cancer care in the Philippines, mainly since it is part of the Health Sector’s 8-Point Action Agenda.

Herbosa also mentioned the inauguration of the East Avenue Medical Center’s Cancer Center, which offers advanced services such as radiation oncology, nuclear medicine, and chemotherapy for cancer patients.

The facility opened last October 8 and has a dedicated breast center. It is projected to become the country’s apex referral center for breast cancer by 2028.

Moreover, Herbosa said the DOH has rolled out free breast cancer screening through accredited providers.

“I am deeply moved by the overwhelming support from various sectors in our fight against cancer, particularly breast cancer. This collective effort, represented by all of you, is a true testament to our shared commitment to ensuring that every Filipino—regardless of their background or circumstance—has access to the quality healthcare they deserve,” Herbosa said.
