Eastern Samar town police chief recovering after attack

TACLOBAN CITY — The police chief of Jipapad town in Eastern Samar is recovering from severe injuries after being attacked by a man inside the police station on Monday, Sept. 23.

Lieutenant Norben Carbonera suffered wounds on his hands and side after he was assaulted by Ariel Ada with a 12-inch knife while sitting in the entrance lobby of the police station, according to Colonel Reynard Chua.

“The suspect attacked our police chief without provocation,” Chua said in a phone interview.

In response to the attack, Senior Master Sergeant Brian Cainoy, one of four officers present, shot and killed Ada.

Carbonera received first aid from Mayor Benjamin Ver, a trained surgeon, before he was transferred to a hospital in Catarman, Northern Samar.

“He is now stable following a successful operation last night,” Chua said.

Investigators have yet to determine what prompted Ada to attack Carbonera.

The Jipapad police have been augmented with troops from the 1st Eastern Samar Provincial Mobile Force Company after the incident.
