4.2-magnitude aftershock recorded in Northern Samar town

A magnitude 4.2 earthquake was recorded in a Northern Samar town on Friday afternoon, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 4.2 earthquake was recorded in a Northern Samar town on Friday afternoon, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

The state seismologist said that this was an aftershock of the magnitude 5.7 earthquake that struck the province on Monday.

The Friday aftershock was located west of Pambujan in Northern Samar. It was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 40 kilometers.

Phivolcs reported the following intensities were raised in various towns:

  • Intensity IV: Pambujan, Laoang, San Roque, and Mondragon in Northern Samar
  • Intensity III: Catarman, Lavezares, San Jose, Bobon, Palapag, Biri, Rosario, Catubig, Gamay, and Lapinig in Northern Samar
  • Intensity II: Mapanas, San Isidro, Allen, and Lope de Vega in Northern Samar; City of Calbayog, and Santa Margarita in Samar; and Arteche and Jipapad in Eastern Samar
  • Meanwhile, Instrumental Intensities were measured in the following areas:
  • Intensity III: Catbalogan City in Samar
  • Intensity II: City of Bulusan in Sorsogan; San Roque in Northern Samar; and Gandara in Samar
  • Intensity I: Mapanas in Northern Samar

Felt intensity is the ground shaking actually felt and reported by affected people through the Phivolcs Earthquake Intensity Scale, while instrumental intensity is measured by intensity meters in and around the area.

According to Phivolcs, there are no expected damages and aftershocks after the 4.2-magnitude earthquake.

In an earlier earthquake information bulletin, the magnitude of the earthquake was 5.0 with a depth of 32 kilometers but was later revised.
