MANILA, Philippines — The state weather bureau on Wednesday raised a red rainfall warning over Metro Manila and surrounding provinces with serious flooding expected in flood-prone areas.

In a rainfall advisory issued at 5:00 a.m., the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said the red warning level is up over Metro Manila, Rizal and Bataan due to Typhoon Carina-enhanced southwest monsoon.

Areas under red warning are forecast to experience over 30 millimeters (mm) of rain in the next two hours, with possible flooding in flood-prone areas.

An orange rainfall warning was raised over Bulacan, Pampanga, Cavite and Zambales while a yellow warning is up over Tarlac, Laguna, Batangas and Quezon(General Nakar, Infanta, Real, Mauban, Sampaloc).

Areas under orange rainfall warning are forecast to have between 15 millimeters (mm) and 30 mm of rain with “threatening” chances of floods; while those under yellow warning may expect 7.5 mm to 15 mm of rain with “possible flooding in flood-prone areas.”

“Meanwhile, light to moderate with occasional heavy rains [will affect] Nueva Ecija and other areas of Quezon which may persist within 3 hours,” Pagasa said.


As of 4:00 a.m., Carina was last spotted 290 kilometers northeast of Itbayat, Batanes with maximum sustained winds of 155 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 190 kph.
