Heavy rains trigger flooding in Sorsogon town

LEGAZPI CITY — Continuous rains brought about by the southwest monsoon triggered flooding in Juban town in Sorsogon province on Tuesday, July 23.

Arvee Lodronio, head of the municipal disaster risk reduction and management, said the villages of Embarcadero and Tinago which are near the coastal areas were flooded due to the heavy rains.

In Grefalda Elementary School in Barangay (village) Tinago, the events for the “Brigada Eskwela,” an annual school maintenance program of the Department of Education, were suspended due to the knee-deep flooding since Monday, July 21.

“We cannot start cleaning our area because of the high tide and continuous rains,” said Maribeth Liwanag, the school head, in a phone interview Tuesday.

She said some of the classrooms were also affected by the flooding.

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration Southern Luzon said in the 8 a.m. bulletin that moderate rains were affecting Masbate, Albay, Sorsogon, Catanduanes, Camarines Norte and Camarines Sur.
