MANILA, Philippines — Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna on Wednesday said she is giving former Mayor Isko Moreno time to reconsider his possible mayoral bid in the 2025 polls.

In a statement, Lacuna said she understands “the reality of politics” but her “commitment” and “sibling love” for Moreno remain even if he is rumored to be seeking a return to the city’s top post.

“In my heart, I am confident that we are both dedicated to serving the Manileños. Thus, I am giving my dear brother, former Mayor [Francisco] Isko Moreno Domagoso, time to reconsider his plans. He still has time to reflect on his decision,” she added.

Moreno served as Manila mayor for one term, winning in the 2019 polls with Lacuna as his running mate. Moreno ran for president in 2022, while Lacuna ran for mayor. He endorsed her mayoral bid.

It appears Lacuna will seek reelection.

However, on social media, there have been calls for Moreno to run for mayor again, with Moreno himself sharing a video where residents were seen chanting “bumalik ka na” (please return).

Moreno captioned this by saying, “Laging may awa ang Diyos (God is always merciful) #TimeWillTell.”

Lacuna said she will always be available to guide Moreno regarding his political decisions.

“As his Ate (sister) in public service, I am here to guide him. During the last campaign, Isko and the Manileños placed their trust in my ability as the first female Mayor of Manila. I acknowledge that the upcoming election in Manila will be a test for the Manileños to weigh my character, leadership, service, and vision for Manila,” she said.

“This is part of our commitment to democratic principles. We are here not for personal ambition but for the welfare of the Manileños and the honor of our nation, represented by Manila as its capital. I respect the decision of former Mayor [Francisco] Isko Moreno Domagoso, while also acknowledging that he still has time to reconsider his plans,” she added.

Moreno and Lacuna have been allies, with Moreno crediting Lacuna’s father, former Manila Vice Mayor Danny Lacuna, for helping shape his political career.

Lacuna said despite politics being discussed months ahead of the filing of certificates of candidacy, her priority will still be working for Manila’s betterment.

“This focus will remain until the filing of candidacies and beyond, if the trust of Manila in our leadership continues,” she said.

“I will continue working for Manila because the Manileños are my top priority. Despite any political circumstances, I remain Ate Honey to Isko because in Manila, love of family endures,” she added.
