MANILA, Philippines — The relief of police commanders in 19 stations in Davao City was due to “discrepancies in terms of the crime statistics,” Philippine National Police spokesperson Col. Jean Fajardo said on Tuesday.

Brig. Gen. Nicolas Deloso Torre III, Davao regional police director, ordered the transfer of the police officers on July 8 without an immediate explanation.

Fajardo did not elaborate on the supposed “discrepancies” but said Torre’s intent was “to improve the delivery of police service and restore the trust of the people.”

“He said his decision was part of his sole prerogative as regional director and his intent was to further improve the delivery of public service to the people of Davao,” she said.

On June 17, Torre replaced Brig. Gen. Aligre Martinez, who was relieved barely 50 days after assuming office and three days following the June 10 operation that failed to arrest televangelist Apollo Quiboloy, who is charged with human trafficking and child sexual abuse. —Frances Mangosing
