PNP to offer free rides for commuters affected by transport strike

MANILA, Philippines — The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) will dispatch 205 cars, trucks, and buses to provide “libreng sakay” or free rides to commuters affected by the upcoming transport strikes starting Monday, April 15.

The NCRPO also disclosed that it will dispatch 6,638 police personnel to ensure public safety during protests.

“A Civil Disturbance Management Team was activated to secure the public and the protesters. Likewise, several police officers will also be deployed to terminals, commercial areas, and border control checkpoints,” NCRPO said in a statement on Sunday.

“Foot, mobile, and motorcycle patrollers, drone operators, and transport escorts along with the Traffic Management Team and allied force from the Local Government Unit will assist in regulating and maintaining the smooth traffic flow along the transport strike-affected routes,” it added.

Moreover, NCRPO chief  General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. assured the public that no threats were monitored before the protest and they would remain on heightened alert.

“We urge all the participants to conduct their program peacefully and responsibly and abide by the guidelines provided. The NCRPO commits to safeguarding your safety as our priority,” Nartatez said.
