NDRRMC validating 22 reported deaths due to trough of LPA in Mindanao

MANILA, Philippines — The number of reported deaths due to flooding brought by the trough of a low-pressure area (LPA) has climbed to 22, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported on Monday.

The reported deaths are still being validated, along with reports of 11 injured and two missing persons, it added.

According to the NDRRMC, a total of 1,388,691 persons or 415,496 families have been affected by the LPA’s trough across five regions in Mindanao: Northern Mindanao, Davao Region, Soccskargen, Caraga, and the Bangsamoro Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

Of the affected persons, 927,367 were from Davao Region, while 455,791 were from Caraga.

NDRRMC’s report issued at 8 a.m. shows that 286 areas are still flooded across Davao Region, Caraga, and BARMM despite the LPA dissipating on February 3.

It further said that due to the LPA’s trough, 1,345 houses were damaged in Northern Mindanao, Davao Region, and Caraga.

NDRRMC estimated that the weather system damaged infrastructure amounting to P738,619,756, most of which were in the Davao Region and Caraga.

Damage to agriculture, meanwhile, was estimated to cost P212,544,830, affecting some 9,940 farmers and fishermen in Caraga alone.

NDRRMC further reported that the government had provided the affected regions with about P179,465,085 worth of assistance.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development previously said that it still has enough standby resources to assist the flood-stricken residents of Mindanao.
