Protect PH sovereignty, rights, Filipinos urged on Rizal Day

MANILA, Philippines — Filipinos should be reminded of their responsibility to protect the country’s sovereignty, Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro said on the commemoration of national hero Dr.  Jose Rizal’s 127th death anniversary.

Teodoro said Rizal was a “visionary” and a “patriot” who inspired others to protect freedom through “words and ideals.”

“His courage and sacrifice inspired others to join the fight for our independence,” Teodoro said.

“Today, may every Filipino be reminded of our shared duty and responsibility to uphold our sovereignty and sovereign rights as citizens of this nation,” he added.

Teodoro likewise urged Filipinos to unite in “protecting our hard-earned peace and independence.”

“Nawa’y manatili sa ating mga puso at diwa ang alab ng pagmamahal sa bayan at itaguyod ang dangal at tapang ng mga Pilipino,” the Defense Secretary continued.

Teodoro’s message comes amid escalating tensions in the West Philippine Sea between the Philippines and China.

Earlier, China’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson reiterated Beijing’s claim that the Ayungin Shoal is part of China’s territory.

In previous statements and interviews, however, the Philippines’ defense cluster has denied this claim, along with Beijing’s accusation that the Philippines is stirring trouble in the contested waters.
