QC launches AI chatbot ‘Sophia’ to aid victims of domestic violence

MANILA, Philippines – An Artificial Intelligence (AI)-assisted chatbot designed to help victims of domestic violence has been launched in Quezon City (QC), the QC local government said on Sunday.

Using the chatbot, named “Sophia,” users will be able to see the locations in Quezon City where they can report or file a complaint, the QC local government explained.

Additionally, users can also save online, or using their own accounts, the evidence of their experience without those files being visible in the history of their mobile phone.

The chatbot also has a feature that ensures its users anonymity so that victim-survivors can seek assistance without fear of being identified,

“Sophia” is developed by the Swiss non-profit organization, Spring ACT, and offers support in different languages including Filipino.

“We ensured that Sophia was not only technologically advanced but also emotionally intelligent. Programming allows us to interact with users in a way that is understanding and respectful and sensitive to the complexities of domestic violence,” Sophia’s founder, Rhiana Spring said.

“Sophia is not just about offering assistance, it embodies our broader commitment to empowering survivors, giving them the tools and the support they need to break free and embark on a journey of healing and empowerment.” she added.
