Cargo truck falls into Quezon canal; helper dead, 9 hurt
LUCENA CITY – A truck helper was killed and nine other people were injured on Sunday night after their cargo truck fell into a canal along the new zigzag road in Pagbilao town in Quezon province.
In a report Monday, the Quezon police said truck driver Dennis Ricafort was negotiating a descending sharp curve in the zigzag road in Barangay Silangang Malicboy around 11:30 p.m., when the vehicle’s brakes malfunctioned.
The wayward truck loaded with carabaos and came from Bicol fell into a small canal and tilted on its side.
The driver and all his nine passengers, mostly helpers, suffered head and body injuries and were rushed to Quezon Medical Center in neighboring Lucena City.
However, one of the helpers, Bobby Vargas, 53, a resident of Oas, Albay, died while undergoing treatment.
