Magnitude 6.0 earthquake rattles Davao Occidental
UPDATED at 12:02 P.M., September 26, 2023, to include the revised magnitude as well as the intensity and instrumental intensities of the earthquake as provided by Phivolcs
MANILA, Philippines — A 6.0-magnitude earthquake shook Davao Occidental on Tuesday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
The tectonic quake hit Balut Island in the municipality of Sarangani at 9:39 a.m. Phivolcs said the temblor occurred at a depth of 122 kilometers.
It added that aftershocks may occur, but it is not expecting damage from this earthquake.
Intensity IV was felt in Glan, Sarangani while Intensity I was felt in the City of General Santos, South Cotabato, according to Phivolcs, while various instrumental intensities were recorded in the following:

- Instrumental Intensity I – Nabunturan in Davao de Oro, Jose Abad Santos and Don Marcelino in Davao Occidental, City of General Santos, City of Kidapawan, Tampakan and Polomolok in South Cotabato, and Malapatan and Kiamba in Sarangani.
In a previous interview with INQUIRER.net, Phivolcs Science Research Analyst Lara Guianan explained that intensity is the power of an earthquake as felt and reported by the affected population while instrumental intensity is the quake’s strength as measured by an intensity meter or scale.
Phivolcs initially reported that the earthquake that struck Balut Island was at 6.6-magnitude.
