Man shot dead in Quezon City

Enjoying a heavy downpour proved to be fatal to a man who was shot and killed while he was standing on the street on Saturday afternoon in Quezon City, according to a police report. Police Officer 3 Gregorio Maramag of the Quezon City Police District’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit identified the victim as Luis Reyes, 29, a resident of San Pablo Street in Novaliches, Quezon City. Maramag said the victim was standing on the street during a heavy downpour, his arms stretched out, when two men on a motorcycle stopped beside him and shot him several times. He managed to run away but he was chased by one of the gunmen who shot him again. The victim was later rushed by bystanders to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. The police said they had yet to determine the motive for the killing. Witnesses told the police that the shooters’ motorcycle did not have any license plate. They also did not see the men’s faces because both were wearing helmets and raincoats at the time of the shooting.—Nancy C. Carvajal

Marikina passes storm test

The city government of Marikina on Sunday said it had passed “the test of [Tropical Storm] ‘Falcon’” as some 25,000 evacuees went back to their homes safe and sound. “If I were to be asked to give my own assessment, I’d say we passed the test of Falcon. We have evacuated the residents out of harm’s way,” Marikina Vice Mayor Jose Fabian Cadiz said in a phone interview. Before leaving the Philippines on Saturday morning, Falcon dumped heavy rains, causing flash floods in Metro Manila and stranding thousands.—Niña Calleja
