The women — all in their 40s but whose names were withheld by the BI — spent over a month in jail.

They were only able to return to the Philippines after the Philippine Consulate in Guangzhou intervened. The Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking assisted them on their arrival.

“This is but one of the possibilities that our countrymen may face if they work illegally abroad,” BI chief Norman Tansingco said.

Tansingco also warned prospective overseas workers not to use illicit tactics to gain employment.
