MMDA eyes conversion of bike lanes to shared lanes

MANILA, Philippines — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is studying the possibility of converting the exclusive bicycle lanes along Edsa to shared lanes with motorcycles, noting that the bike lane has been “underutilized.”

Two days after announcing that it would apprehend motorcycle riders traversing through the lane intended for cyclists along Edsa, the MMDA revealed on Tuesday that it conducted a preliminary study on the possibility of implementing road sharing of the bike lane for bicycles and motorcycles.

“We will have a stakeholders’ meeting on Aug. 29, which will be attended by a group of cyclists and motorcycle riders,” MMDA acting Chair Romando Artes told a press briefing in Pasig City.
