Negros Occidental reports effects of Egay in province's agri sector

BACOLOD CITY — The southwest monsoon enhanced by Typhoon “Egay” brought on flooding and strong winds that destroyed and damaged 1,645 houses and caused P46.7 million in losses to crops, fisheries and livestock in Negros Occidental.

The Provincial Disaster Management Program Division (PDMPD) reported that the typhoon damaged 1,585 houses and destroyed 60 in 71 barangays in 18 local governments in Negros Occidental.

The bad weather also affected 15,138 families or a total of 61,022 individuals in Negros Occidental from July 22 to 28.

The Office of the Provincial Agriculturist reported a total of P46,098,418 in damage to crops and fisheries.

The report said damage to rice was P38,056,228, high value commercial crops – P3,336,490, corn – P3,725,700 and fisheries – P980,000.

Damage to farm animals was pegged at P602,830, the PDMPD reported.
