Girl, 7, dies after bunch of coconuts hit her head in Cotabato

KIDAPAWAN CITY, COTABATO — A 7-year-old girl died when she was hit on the head with a bunch of young coconuts in the remote village of Mua-an here on Friday afternoon, police officials confirmed on Saturday.

Police Captain Razel Enriquez, the city deputy police chief, identified the girl as Shikayna Aguirre, an incoming Grade 2 pupil, who was playing near her residence when the incident happened.

Enriquez disclosed that a parent of the victim requested a neighbor to climb their coconut trees to collect the mature fruits for copra, but the bunch of young coconuts fell, hitting the child in the head.

“The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital but pronounced dead upon arrival by the attending physician,” Enriquez narrated.

Enriquez said the victim’s neighbor voluntarily surrendered to the police but was released following an amicable settlement and the declaration of non-interest to file charges by the child’s parents.
