Passage of law requiring cops to use body-worn, dashboard cam sought

MANILA, Philippines — Deputy Speaker and Las Piñas representative Camille Villar wants a law that will require police officers to use body-worn cameras and dashboard cameras for their patrol cars.

Villar said House Bill 8352, which she authored, would institutionalize the use of these cameras and set regulations on how to use them.

She said camera footage would provide evidence for cases that may be filed after the police operations.

Villar’s proposed measure on public order and safety is pending in the House committee.

“This bill seeks to formalize a body-work camera and dash cam policy for all law enforcement officers with the authority to conduct searches and make arrests,” she said.

This is “in order to promote transparency in law enforcement operations and pave the way for speedy investigations in cases of dispute,” she added.

“This policy will also prevent law enforcers from excessive use of force in the execution of their duties,” she noted.
