STUDENT KILLED

POLICE are investigating the death of a female college student in barangay Cogon-Pardo, Cebu City.

Mary Luz Candoli, 19, a first year Hotel Restaurant and Management in a Cebu City university, was shot dead in her house on Wednesday night.

Police said the woman’s boyfriend Julito Ponce, 41, a plumber, was a suspect in the killing. He could not be found after the woman was killed.

Police said Candoli was last seen alive with Ponce going to the second floor of the house.

Before they went up, the boyfriend handed his salary to the woman. Ponce also owns an Internet cafe in sitio Romblon, barangay Inayawan where he lives.

Police said that according to the caretaker of the Internet shop, Jeremias Zapanta, 25, he heard a gunshot ring out a few minutes after the couple went upstairs.

Zapanta later found the woman in the room with a gunshot wound in the chest.

A .45 pistol and four bullets were recovered in the crime scene.

Zapanta said he didn’t see the couple fighting or notice any commotion before that.

PO1 Esmer Escultor, homicide investigator, said there was talk that Ponce claimed that what happened was an accident.

Jealousy is still being considered a possible motive for the killing due to reports that Ponce was upset after he caught the woman chatting with another man on Facebook. /CORRESPONDENT CHITO O. ARAGON

MAN HOLDS MOTHER HOSTAGE

A MENTALLY unstable man held hostage his mother with a bladed weapon yesterday in their house in Liloan town, north Cebu.

Condino “Dondon” Transmonte, 49, was armed with a 12-inch scythe and two spears when he started acting strange at about 5 a.m.

His 89-year-old mother, Desideria Transmonte escaped unharmed after three hours in sitio Capas, barangay Catarman,

She slipped out the house back door while Condino was negotiating with police past 8 a.m.

At 11:30 a.m., Condino surrendered peacefully to the police.

Condino said he had no intention of hurting his mother and that he just asked her to lock the house because someone was out to kill him.

Desideria told police that her son ate only a little food in the past few days and had been drinking heavily.
