4 dead, 2 injured in Cainta fire

MANILA, Philippines—Four people were killed and two others were injured after a fire of still unknown origin struck a house in Cainta, Rizal, before dawn Tuesday, a city fire worker said Wednesday.

Rey Reyes of the Cainta fire department said members of the Nepomuceno family identified as Gary, 46; Juliet, 62; Francine, 4; and Butchay, 2, were trapped and burned inside their blazing house at 542 Champaca Street in Greenland Subdivision, Phase 4, Barangay (village) San Juan, Cainta, Rizal around 4:17 a.m.

“Tustadong tustado yung mga victims (The victims were severely burned),” he said.

Ligaya, 58, on the other hand sustained minor burns in her leg, while Mamerta, 84, complained of difficulty in breathing.

He said the fire that destroyed the family’s bungalow house was completely put out at 4:55 a.m.

Cost of damage was pegged at roughly P800,000, he said, adding that the cause of fire and where it started are yet to be determined by investigators.
