ZAMBOANGA CITY—Suspected communist New People’s Army rebels raided a police station in Tigbao town in Zamboanga del Sur shortly after 7 p.m. Monday, carting away assorted high powered firearms and taking a policeman as hostage.

Senior Superintendent Jose Bayani Gucela, police chief for Zamboanga del Sur, said some 70 to 80 armed men wearing full military uniform stormed the town’s police station “and they took one of our duty officers, PO2 Faizal Juani, as hostage.”

Gucela said the Tigbao Police station, which is located along the main highway, “is the most isolated and a very quiet area.”

Four policemen were on duty when the attacked happened.
