P300,000 worth of ‘hot’ lumber seized in Laguna town

LUCENA CITY — Police anti-illegal logging operatives and Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) personnel recovered an estimated P300,000 worth of illegally cut lumber in Kalayaan town in Laguna province on Thursday, Feb. 9.

In a report Friday, the Police Region 4A said combined units from the local police and the DENR team found a pile of abandoned “lauan” lumber of various sizes in Barangay San Antonio around 5:30 p.m.

The seized lumber measured  6,00 board feet (14.15 cubic meters).

According to the report, a certain “Arnold”  owned the lumber.

The confiscated forest products were believed to have been illegally cut in the Sierra Madre mountain ranges.

Sierra Madre contains the largest remaining tract of old-growth tropical rainforest in the Philippines.

The hot lumber was hauled to the DENR office in Sta. Cruz town for proper disposition.
