P257,000 ‘hot’ lumber seized in Quezon province
LUCENA CITY — Policemen and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) agents recovered on Thursday a pile of abandoned and illegally sourced lumber worth over P257,000 in Mauban town in Quezon province, police said.
Acting on reports from the barangay intelligence network, the authorities found around 9 a.m. Wednesday 31 pieces of narra lumber in Barangay Bagong Bayan, the Quezon police said in a report.
The operation netted 1,713.71 board feet (4.04 cubic meters) of hot lumber with an estimated market value of P257,056, the report said.
Police were conducting further investigations to identify the persons behind the illegal forest products.
The DENR took the confiscated lumber for proper disposition.
Mauban, a coastal town facing the Pacific Ocean, has long been known as a transshipment point for illegal forest products from the Sierra Madre bound for Metro Manila and Southern Tagalog provinces. INQ
