Wildlife trafficker nabbed in Lucena City buy-bust

LUCENA CITY – A 47-year-old man selling an endangered bird species was arrested  in a buy-bust operation here on Saturday.

The Quezon police on Sunday reported that Marlou Tiña, a local resident, was arrested after he  sold a “kilyawan” (Black-naped Oriole) for P500 to an undercover police officer at Perez Park around 4 p.m.

The report said the deal was made online.

The black-naped oriole (Oriolus chinensis) is classified as a wildlife endangered species.

The suspect was detained and would be facing a formal complaint for violating Republic Act 9147, or the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act.

The bird will be turned over to the local office of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources for proper disposition.
