Classes, work suspended in Eastern Visayas due to non-stop rains

TACLOBAN CITY — Non-stop rains caused by a low-pressure area (LPA) resulted in the suspension of classes and work in Eastern Visayas on Tuesday, Jan. 10.

Northern Samar Gov. Edwin Ongchuan issued an order suspending all classes at all levels due to rains and floods.

In Catubig town, one of its hanging bridges was damaged by the flood.

Its rescue group has been activated for any possible rescue operations in villages with flooding or landslides.

In Mapanas town, fishermen were reminded not to venture into the open sea since it is dangerous for them to do so.

Several local governments suspended classes and work in Eastern Samar due to flooding.

In the town of Oras, many barangays have reportedly flooded though no evacuees were reported.

In Arteche, several houses, particularly in the villages of Cabayangan and Bigo, were affected by floods.

Mayor Benjamin Ver of Jipapad town, also in Eastern Samar, made a video appeal to President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and provincial officials for assistance.

Ver said the town of more than 13,000 people have yet to fully recover from the devastation they experienced on Christmas Day.

“Our funds are almost depleted. I appeal to our President, Bongbong Marcos; our governor, Ben Evardone; and congresswoman Fe Abunda to help us. We specifically need food and drinking water,” the town mayor said.

In Maydolong town, five of its public schools were also flooded.

In Leyte, suspension of classes and work remained in Tacloban City and in the towns of Palo, Jaro, Barugo, San Miguel, Santa, Fe, Alangalang, and Carigara, among others.

Tacloban City Mayor Alfred Romualdez has to use his own personal sports utility vehicle to help stranded constituents due to the floods.

Private car owners have also taken some stranded passengers for a ride as public utilities were either full of passengers or stopped their operations due to the bad weather.

In San Miguel town, a landslide was reported in Barangay Caraycaray, which serves as the main route to the town of Babatngon.

The continuous rains also prompted eight towns of Biliran province to suspend work and classes.
