Heavy rains trigger landslides, floods in Nueva Vizcaya

Torrential rains that began on Thursday (Jan. 5) caused rivers to swell in Kasibu town, Nueva Vizcaya province, flooding overflow bridges and causing landslides, authorities said Friday.

SANTIAGO CITY—Torrential rains that began on Thursday (Jan. 5) caused rivers to swell in Kasibu town, Nueva Vizcaya province, flooding overflow bridges and causing landslides, authorities said Friday.

Floodwater inundated the Macalong-Cordon and the Poblacion-Alloy overflow bridges, as well as low-lying roads, after some of the rivers and creeks in Kasibu swelled, according to disaster risk reduction management officer Gladys Lunag.

She said villagers were prohibited from crossing the rivers to avoid accidents.

The intense rains also triggered landslides in various sections of the national road in Tadji village, also in Kasibu.

A retaining wall of a residential house was also reportedly damaged due to a landslide.

In Nueva Vizcaya’s Alfonso Castañeda town, work in local government offices was suspended due to the inclement weather.
