MANILA, Philippines — Scattered rains are expected in the Visayas and Mindanao on Monday due to the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) with a low pressure area (LPA) embedded inside, according to the state weather bureau.

In its early morning update, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said the LPA was last sighted 790 kilometers east of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur.

“Ang LPA ay nakapaloob sa isang weather system – ito ay ang ITCZ. Itong ITCZ ay naapektuhan ang malaking bahagi ng ating bansa,” Pagasa weather specialist Aldczar Aurelio said.

(The LPA is inside another weather system, which is the ITCZ. The ITCZ is affecting a big part of the country.)

The ITCZ, Aurelio said,  is expected to trigger overcast skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over the entire Visayas and Mindanao.

Aurelio said fair weather with isolated rains will prevail in Metro Manila and the rest of the country.

The LPA, meantime, is forecast to develop into a tropical depression.

During the season of amihan or the northeast monsoon, storms are more likely to make landfall, he pointed out.

“Dalawa ang posibilidad ng track ng LPA: Isa ay lalapit at maaaring tutumbukin ang Eastern Visayas. Pangalawa, maaring patungo sa Northern Luzon,” he further detailed.

(There are two possible tracks for this LPA: First, it may move closer and hit Eastern Visayas or second, it may move toward Northern Luzon.)

Aurelio added that the northeast monsoon will bring cloudy skies and rains to Batanes and Babuyan Islands.

The Ilocos region, Cordillera Administrative Region, and the rest of Cagayan Valley will likewise experience light, isolated rainfall due to the said weather system.
