COTABATO CITY—The Catholic-run Notre Dame University (NDU) has started investigating Monday’s death of a Grade 6 pupil, who was attending rehearsals for the upcoming graduation ceremonies.

“We are still investigating,” said Fr. Eduardo Tanudtanud, NDU president. A panel was tasked with determining what caused the death of 12-year-old Nur Azis Jalalis.

Tanudtanud said the boy was among the students attending rehearsals for the graduation ceremonies and was seen Monday morning heading to the school clinic.

Reports said the boy had complained of nausea. “The school nurse attended to him and helped the child lie down in one of the beds,” he said.

Moments later, Tanudtanud said the boy vomited and turned blue. “He was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival,” he said.

There were reports that the boy choked while playing plastic balloon. The boy was buried under Islamic rites Tuesday in Maguindanao. Edwin Fernandez, Inquirer Mindanao
