Teacher drowns in Camarines Sur flood

LEGAZPI CITY—A public school teacher drowned Tuesday when he was swept away by the flood, which rose due to days of incessant raining, while crossing a spillway in Bato town in Camarines Sur province.
Lieutenant Ma. Alda Baldonado, Bato deputy police chief, said Wednesday that the victim, Romeo Sison Jr. of Libmanan town, a teacher at San Roque High School, and his co-teacher Gemmo Intia, were crossing the spillway in Barangay San Vicente, pushing their bicycle through knee-deep flood around 5:45 p.m., when the incident happened.
Investigation revealed that Sison was swept away by the strong current and disappeared. Intia was able to swim to safety.
Baldonado said Intia asked for help to rescue Sison.
Rescuers found Sison after two hours, some 50 meters away from the spillway.
Sison was taken to a hospital in Nabua town, but was declared dead.
Baldonado said the teachers were just surveying the area to find out if that could serve as an alternative route when they go home on weekends.
